5 Lessons I Learned from Bart Yasso
Bart spits knowledge like he was the Chief Running Officer for Runner’s World for 31 years. Oh wait, he was. 😎
He are some of my favorite pieces of advice:
Treat Yo Self
Treating yourself is important. Bart’s example he mentioned was looking forward to a latte after a morning run. He doesn’t have a latte every day, but you can bet your bottom dollar (I only know this saying from Annie) he will have one following a run if he’s feeling one! It’s something to look forward to and honestly, I think this is good practice for your mental health. Obviously he’s not talking about an entire pizza after every run, but finding little things that bring you joy, whatever that could be (even a nice, long bath) is great.
For me, I’m going to start taking morning coffee walks. That’s a walk where you drink coffee at the same time. I know what you’re thinking. Dynamic af, Michelle. Teach me how.
Our Sport is Unique
Running has grown a TON over the past years. Meb has become a household name. Maybe I’ll even name my unborn child Meb. TBD on that though. We are very lucky to have found running. Not only is it amazing for our physical health, but it keeps our brain sharp too. The endorphins we feel are unmatched. If we’re having a bad day, we know how to turn it around. Go on a run. Having trouble trying to solve a problem? Go on a run. Getting chased by a chihuahua at high speeds? Thank goodness you know how to run. That’s a true story, by the way. I was also 5 and screaming at the top of my lungs.
The Connections We Make from Running are Special
Everyone has a different story. Running bring us together. When you go on a long run with someone, you’ll get to know them on an entirely different level. On a 20-miler, I’ve touched on everything from “what are you eating after this” to “my biggest fear is death”. We talk politics, we talk religion, we share our deepest, darkest secrets. We poop on the side of the trail together when we realize a bathroom doesn’t exist (wait wut), we cry when we don’t want to go on after mile 18, and we tag each other in every running meme on Instagram. Running friends become family.
We Inspire Others
It doesn’t matter how fast you are. Or how many miles you ran this week. All runners are inspirational. You may not even notice this, but you ARE inspiring others by running. Maybe they see you on social media and get inspired to go on a run, maybe they drive by you and decide they want to take a leap of faith and sign up for a local 5k. You are making a difference in not only your life, but someone else’s. #chills #inspo #okkeepitgoingmichelle
Don’t Drink Your Coffee Too Close to Running or Else You’re Going to Have to Stop at a 711, and Not For a Slurpee.
I don’t think I really need to explain this one.
